As soon as the Apple Store got over its shyness, I placed my orders for iLife and iWork ’08. However, later in the day, Apple made the iWork ’08 suite available for download as a trial package. While the iWork ’06 suite was installed on all new Macs, it was never available as a trial download. What’s nice is that you can actually just buy the serial number from within iWork now. Nice. Had I known that, I wouldn’t have opted for the shipped package.
It’s nice to see Apple finally adopting the shareware approach to software distribution.
What’s even nicer is that the education price for the download is $49, while the price for the boxed version is $71. However, there is no download discount for the consumer version. Bummer

As I said earlier this year, why would someone spend $54 on Tables, when iWork (a $79 package) was slated to get a kick-ass spreadsheet program (Numbers) in ’08.
Somewhere in Germany, Daniel Schwill is rethinking his pricing model.

I’ve been using Cyndicate for the last 24 hours and I am really enjoying it. I find it has a much better approach than NewsFire. However, after reading a bit on the developers, I’ve uncovered this. Not to let a story be told from one side, there is also this.
I don’t know. $30 is a good bit of money to invest in an app with this much drama behind it.

That huge ass background graphic you use on your site is very annoying on a broadband connection.
On an iPhone over an EDGE connection, it is down right sadistic.
Please, get rid of it.

Just what the world needs – another RSS feed reader. Fans of the former PulpFiction product will be happy to know that is has been rebirthed as Cyndicate. I own licenses for Newsfire, and have used Vienna quite a bit, but I have to give Cyndicate props. It looks like a really slick feed reader. However, at $30, it’s competing directly against the big boy in town, NetNewsWire. You definitely can’t say that the Mac is lacking for newsreaders though, can you?

It seems that the iPhone is facing a somewhat hostile AT&T retail sales force. According to MacDailyNews and iPhone Topic stories, several AT&T retail outlets have removed the iPhones from their displays, and are refusing to show them to interested customers unless they buy them first.
If this is true, and prevalent, it could prove troublesome for Apple. Although Apple clearly has the upper hand in the iPhone selling experience, the success of the iPhone does depend upon distribution. And as any Mac user from the 90′s will tell you, letting a hostile retail outlet control your customers buying experience can have devastating results.
Nobody outside of AT&T and Apple knows how long the AT&T exclusive sales deal is slated to last. If low paid AT&T employees are truly anti-iPhone, then the exclusive arrangement cant end soon enough for Apple. Many will argue that the iPod success was largely based upon broad distribution from stores like Best Buy, Circuit City, and other electronics store chains. The sooner Apple can expand iPhone sales to a wider chain, the faster they will hit their sales mark.

Roughly Drafted has written what I consider to be the clearest explanation of the Press and their penchant for iPhone misinformation dissemination. For those who didn’t catch the latest misinformation dissemination on Neal Cavuto’s program yesterday, RDM does an excellent job of breaking it down.

Apple has notified the press of a Mac event that will be held on their campus August 7th @ 10AM. Everyone seems to believe this update will definitely be the new iMac, and possibly include an updated iLife and/or iWork.
I’m hoping for an update to the Mac Pros. Although there is a higher end 8 core configuration, the lower end configurations are exactly the same as they were 51 weeks ago when they were announced at WWDC2006.

So the first iPhone update has hit the wire. It is available through iTunes, and should present itself immediately upon connecting your iPhone. So far, it looks like it is mostly bug fixes related to Safari. There are a few reports of minor interface tweaks, but for the most part, the update covers bug fixes mainly for Mobile Safari.
I didn’t have any trouble updating my iPhone. The update did seem like it stalled mid-way through, but it finally finished without any problems.

In anticipation of Leopards arrival, I’ve whipped together a Leopard Countdown widget. Built over an agonizing 5 or 6 minutes using Dashcode, this widget will tick of the seconds, minutes, hours and days until Leoopard makes its debut. Currently the widget assumes the launch date will be October 5th, 2007 at 6PM. Once Apple makes the date/time official, the widget will updated.
Enjoy.
